The MOVAS cell line (Mouse Aortic Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells) is a spindle-shaped cell lineage that was first isolated in 1999 from the aortic smooth muscle of adult mice. Primary vascular smooth muscle cells were obtained through digestion with collagenase and elastase, followed by transfection with a retrovirus encoding the SV40 large T antigen and a neomycin resistance gene. The transfected cells were subjected to clonal selection in culture medium containing 0.4 mg/ml G418, and subclones were obtained using the limiting dilution method. The MOVAS cell line is widely used in cardiovascular disease research.
